The Background

Capital Group is one of world’s leading investment firms, with over 9,000 employees globally.

The company’s long-standing investment in its people has earned it recognition as a Forbes Best Large Employer and a Best Workplace for New Grads.

As the business evolved, leaders set out to find a learning solution that could reinforce its culture of adaptability and growth mindset while scaling seamlessly across teams.

The Challenge

The program had to succeed without compliance mandates, relying instead on voluntary adoption sparked by interest and relevance.

After piloting with 200 leaders, the initiative needed to expand to 1,600 employees across global sales and marketing while remaining consistent and accessible. At the same time, learning formats had to be flexible, blending microlearning and deeper leadership development.

The Approach

Capital Group partnered with Big Think+ to develop a custom program to:

Seamlessly fit Big Think+ classes into ongoing internal initiatives like book clubs and monthly spotlights to deepen engagement.

Offer flexible learning paths that combine in-depth leadership classes with quick-hit microlearning to fit into busy schedules.

Incorporate celebrated thought leaders to provide external perspectives that keep learning relevant and connected to company priorities.

Capital Group treated the rollout like an internal marketing campaign, using monthly newsletter sends to spotlight new content and spark early-week engagement. This simple cadence drove nearly 800 learners to the platform and sustained a 50 percent voluntary participation rate across the 1,600-person sales and marketing population.

To reinforce priority skills, Big Think+ built custom curations focused on growth mindset, adaptability, curiosity, and continuous learning. Collections like Making an Impact at Work, Creating a Vision, and One Percent Better helped teams quickly find content that supported their day-to-day performance.

Conclusion

Capital Group has shown that voluntary learning can succeed at scale when it is integrated into culture and promoted with intention.

What began as a 200-person pilot has grown to more than 1,200 learners, powered by internal campaigns that keep content visible and relevant. Their success shows that when programs fit the way people work, employees choose to engage—no mandate required.
